“Isn't life a series of images that change as they repeat themselves?” (Andy Warhol).
Maykel Schoonus paints, takes photos and makes film. His style is defined as a mix of pop culture and religious themes, inspired by music, art history and the media.
Born in 1974 in Tilburg Maykel attended the art academy during the nineties. In 2003 he started an education in art history at the Leiden University, where he attained his bachelor degree in 2007 and his master degree Theory and History of Modern and Contemporary Art in 2009. Maykel researched religious themes in the art of Andy Warhol and Keith Haring.
You can also find these themes in Maykels art. Often you’ll see references to and symbols of the catholic tradition. Maykel isn’t a catholic himself, but severely interested in the dogmas of the catholic tradition. The way the catholic church communicates these dogmas are also very interesting to Maykel and this you’ll find in his work more often.
In the history of art Maykel got to know the art of, amongst others, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Bill Viola, Mark Ryden and Gerhard Richter. They have become a big source of inspiration to him.

“Drawing is still basically the same as it has been since prehistoric times. It brings together man and the world. It lives through magic”. (Keith Haring)
